A strange request...
mChat was a very popular addition to my college hockey website. It was used a ton during the games for live banter this past weekend.
Years ago there was something called "FlashChat". That chat had a cool feature. Basically it had a button in which users could click and a sound would play for all the participating people in chat. So in my case, I programmed that button to play the school song when we scored a goal.
Anyway... I know sounds can be used in mChat. But is it possible to have a button that activates a sound file and plays it for all on mChat? I would just love to have a button to click and it would play the school song .mp3
I think a feature like this would be pretty popular for certain boards. Even better if only certain users had permissions to use it.
Is something like this even possible?
A sound button?

Re: A sound button?
Hi Jupiter
Since mChat 2.1.0 this is definitely possible. Have you already upgraded to that version?
Actually I've already implemented a similar feature in a private mChat add-on extension. I'll have to check how much code from there I could reuse and what needs to be added to make it fit your description. A new permission would have to be added for example, but that should be easy.
Making it a donors-only extension wouldn't scare you away, would it?

Re: A sound button?
I have the most recent version...
Adding a new permission is not a big deal. I just do not want just anyone in chat to be able to "ring the bell" so to speak. If this sound button was allowed by only certain group members, that would work best.
I am not scared aware from a Donors only type of extension... My users would just LOVE this type of addition to the chat. Even better would be the ability to add multiple audio buttons. That would be just spectacular!

Re: A sound button?
A permission to use the button makes perfect sense. Without it there would be chaos, no doubt.
Adding multiple sounds doesn't make it any more difficult. I'm thinking of adding a new setting to mChat's global settings page in the ACP where you set up the URLs for the sound file. Is that what you had in mind too?

Re: A sound button?
Exactly!
You could have an "add an audio button" of some sorts. Be able to label the button. Then assign the URL for the MP3. Seems that would work best. Then those buttons would be at the bottom of the chat and would only be seen by those with permissions. But would be heard by all if clicked.

Sounds reasonable. I'll look into it when I get a chance.
