Multiple user login notification spam

#1

Post by Bgagger » 17 Feb 2019, 20:18

This is another weird behavior I haven't been able to pin down yet.

The notification message sent to the main room when a user logs into the forum at times show up several times in a row.
just logged in
just logged in
just logged in
As many as 3-10 times within a minute. Multiple notifications of the same user logging in, over and over. But they say they only logged in once. Two or three are not at all uncommon.

It is happening fairly frequently for different users.

You can shut off the notice under user settings for mChat. But it could also be a useful feature to have, as keeping track of who is online can be a bit unclear.

Does anyone else have a similar problem? Could it be a phpBB issue with the boardware not registering user logins properly?
It could possibly be a browser specific thing, but I haven't been able to confirm that.

Hi, me again ;)

I am using the latest phpbb version (3.2.5) and also latest mChat and Rooms, i have a seperate room for the logins and can see all logins but never recorgnized such a behavior.

Are u sure ur up2date with phpbb and the involved Extensions?

Can u maybe send a List or Picture of all installed Extensions? It's possible some ext's don't harm together.

Do you recorgnize this problem since the beginning or just since a view days/weeks?

PS: I tested with MacOs and Firefox + Chrome

There was never much issue on the test site, but since the live site was upgraded we have had a lot more users, that's when the problem became apparent.

These are the extensions we have enabled:
Board Announcements 1.1.0
Collapsible Forum Categories 1.0.3
Dice Extension 1.0.0
mChat 2.1.2
mChat Archive Search Addon 1.1.2
mChat Icons Menu Addon 1.2.0
mChat Infinite Scroll Addon 1.1.0
mChat Online Banners Addon 1.1.2
mChat Roll Dice 1.0.1
mChat Rooms Addon 1.2.6
mChat Rooms Toggle 1.0.1
mChat User Time Addon 1.0.1
Password Strength 1.2.2
phpBB 3.2 Active Notifications 0.9
phpBB 3.2 PM Search 1.0.0
Private Message Box Status Bars 2.0.2
Simple Spoiler 1.3.0
Stop Forum Spam 1.1.9

I am using Firefox and I don't think this occurs for me, but other users who also use Firefox do make create multiple login notices. So perhaps itäs not browser related after all. But I haven't gotten enough data to really confirm that yet.

Ok thx for the infos. Lets wait for kasimi, he can understand conflicts between ext's a lot better than i, but i don't see any ext that will cause such a problem in my opinion.

What board version is ur phpbb installation?

Also beware of beta extensions eg. the phpBB 3.2 Active Notifications 0.9 beta ext's can alway cause problems to completely different ext's u would never expect.

My way to figure this out would be to disable all exts, then just enable mchat + rooms and let some users do tests, just log in/out all the time and u stay in and check the login messages.

if this is working without all other ext's it could be another ext. Enable one ext after another, always purge the cache after each ext and test again for errors, then enable the next ext and repeat. so on till u can find a ext that causes the problem :)

Thanx for the suggestions.

phpBB 3.2 Active Notifications is the only ext still in beta. It is a critical one for us though.
But the problem appeared before we installed that.

But I will try to do some testing to see if I can find an interfering ext.

we're on phpBB 3.2.4 right now.

oh, please make an update to 3.2.5 as fas as i know the newest mChat and rooms Ext are already made for the newest version. Maybe this is the only thing u need to solve the problem. But always do a DB backup and update it the right way.

A few more questions that might help find out what's going on:
  1. What are the users doing while the 2nd, 3rd etc notification is posted? Are they browsing, posting, chatting?
  2. Do the users that trigger multiple notifications use the Remember me feature? Are they hidden?
  3. Did you edit any files of mChat or the Rooms extension? Which ones? Save your edits and test with a fresh copy of these files.

If you're stuck, this is really the only way to figure out what's wrong:

If anyone else has a similar problem, our current solution is to simply disable the login notifications under ACP -> mChat -> Global settings.
It is a useful, but not really critical feature.
At least until I have more time to troubleshoot the cause of the issue. The TODO list is simply too long.
Thanks for all the advice though, it will be useful once I get back around to it.
