Quote & BBCodes Permissions Clash

#1

Post by EVO_VV » 21 May 2018, 13:54

Have just discovered that if you set the permissions of a Group to allow the use of Quote and dis-allow the use of BBCodes then the Quote will not work.
Is there a workaround or fix for this ?

Quote is a BBCode, so I guess this is normal .. ? :D

Yes that is why it does not work but there are two separate permissions.
So I was expecting the Quote one to be able to allow just that BBCode.

mChat's Can quote messages permission controls the display of the quote icon next to each message. It is not directly related to BBCodes. Even if a user doesn't have the permission, he can still use the quote BBCode.

I don't think there's a solution for your problem, except for maybe this extension which is still in development and not yet compatible with mChat.

Not sure I explained that too well.
The Quote does not appear on the right when the permissions are disabled for BBCodes and enabled for Quote.

As I was trying to explain in my last post: Can quote messages is entirely unrelated to the user being able to use the [quote] BBCode. Instead, it is meant to display/hide the quote icon.

Let's say you set Can use BBCodes to no, which means the user can't use any BBCodes, and if he does, they are rendered as is. Therefore, displaying the quote icon doesn't make much sense. The user would click on it and send a message like [quote]quoted message[/quote], but it wouldn't render the quote as BBCodes are disabled. This is why Can quote messages only takes effect if the user Can use BBCodes.

OK now I understand what is happening.

Might I suggest then that instead of 'Can Quote messages' it be amended to something like 'Show Quote Icon (Function not available if BBCodes is disabled)' so that it a little clearer as to what it does.

Yes, that is a good idea. How about a little shorter:
  • Can see quote icon (requires BBCode permission)
We can do the same for the like icon:
  • Can see like icon (requires BBCode permission)

Indeed I had forgotten about it, thanks for bringing it to my attention again. :)
